So you've decided that a self storage space is the way to go. But how on earth do you know what size you need? It's easier than you think. Check out our tips on calculation the right sized storage space for you.
Estimate your space easily
A simple way to figure out the space size you need is to think of it in rooms. Not including bulky furniture like couches, the items in one room should fit in a 1.5 x 1.5m space. A 1.5 x 3m space will fit belongings from 2-3 rooms.
If you are looking to store belongings from your entire home a 3 x 3m space will work for a small home or a 2 bedroom apartment. A 6 x 3m space will fit belongings from a larger home.
What if it's not that simple?
If you have bits and pieces scattered all over the place that you want to store rather than the belongings from a single room, it's slightly trickier. One strategy is to create a list of things you might like to store, and then grab a box and measure it up.
If you don't want to actually pack everything away now, you can see how many items you can fit in a box, tick them off the list, and then put them back. Work your way through the whole list and you'll know how many boxes that is, and then work out the space you need using your measurements of the size of the box.
Go slightly bigger if you are time poor now
If you simply don't have the time to implement the strategy above, it all comes down to a good guess-timate. Eyeball the items you would like to store, take a reasonable guess as to the size of storage unit you will need, and then pick the next size up.
Chances are you will find more items that you will want to add to this space over time if there's any room leftover, and it's better to have a little extra space than to run out of room. It's also not to underestimate the importance of easily accessing the things you need.
